Venue and Accessibility

The Fachtagung will take place in Hörsaal 102 and Hörsaal 118 at the University of Basel in the main building.

When speaking of the geography of Basel, the left and right sides of the Rhine always refer to the direction in which the water flows. As the Rhine bends its way through Basel, the terms “East” and “West” are not ideal.
Please check in advance if your accommodation is on the right-hand side of the Rhine (Klein-Basel) or on the left-hand side of the Rhine (Gross-Basel). The conference will be held exclusively on the left-hand side of the Rhine (Gross-Basel).
Please note that the entity Basel is split into two cantons (states). The conference will take place in the canton of Basel-Stadt. You may also find accommodation in Basel-Landschaft (Basel-Land). However, please be aware of additional travel costs and travel time to and from the city (Basel-Stadt).
Please be aware that you cannot buy tickets for public transportation in the trams, trains or buses in Basel-Stadt. You must acquire them at the green vending machines (Cash or Card) or on your phone using the applications provided by SBB or BVB (links to the apps will follow shortly).
Ask your accommodation if they will provide you with a BaselCard providing you unlimited free access to public transport throughout Basel-Stadt and parts of Basel-Land throughout your stay.

From or via Germany: If you are travelling from or via Germany, you will arrive (first) at Basel Badischer Bahnhof (Basel Bad Bf) on the right-hand side of the Rhine (Klein-Basel). The train might(!) proceed to Bahnhof Basel SBB (Basel SBB) on the left-hand side hand of the Rhine (Gross-Basel). Please book your train tickets according to which station you’d like to get out at. From both stations, you have access to tram and bus lines. If you get out at the wrong station, Bus 30 (Basel SBB–Basel Bad Bf) is the main bus line connecting both stations.
From or via France: The train will arrive at Bahnhof Basel SBB (Basel SBB) on the left-hand side of the Rhine (Gross-Basel). From there, you have access to nearly all tram lines and some bus lines.
From or via Switzerland (and Italy and Austria): The train will arrive at Bahnhof Basel SBB (Basel SBB) on the left-hand side of the Rhine (Gross-Basel). From there, you have access to nearly all tram lines and some bus lines.
- In contrast to other countries’ rail services, reservations are rare and expensive on Swiss trains. Consider only reserving seats during rush hour.
- In contrast to other countries’ rail services, prices are sold at a fixed price and do not increase the later you book. However, if you want to save money, you can buy a Super Spar Ticket in advance, which is less expensive than the fixed price. Please be aware that there is only a limited contingent.

Please check with the bus company you have booked where they will drop you off, as Basel does not have a central bus station.

EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg: After arriving, please follow the signs in the direction of the Swiss sector to enter Switzerland. Besides Taxis that are expensive, only Bus 50 connects the EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg with Basel SBB. Please be aware that the bus can get quite full quickly, and there is limited seating. The bus departs nearly every 15 minutes.
Zurich International Airport: After luggage claim, please make your way to the train station at the Airport indicated by signs with SBB/S-Bahn. From there, you have a direct connection to Basel SBB with the Flugzug (IR 36) that departs hourly or less. If you’ve missed the Flugzug (IR 36) consider taking any train in direction Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zürich HB) and taking the direct train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zürich HB) to Basel SBB that runs every half an hour either under the operation of the SBB (as IC, EC), SNCF (as TGV lyria), or DB (as IC(E), EC). In any case, your ticket is valid on all trains to basel. For more information on the train service in Switzerland, see above under By train from or via Switzerland (and Italy and Austria).
